For the questions about why I figure I’d pay more in a universal healthcare system, I’m very fortunate - to cover myself and my husband with the best tier for us is $14.33 a month, with a $250 deductible each, and a $1,500 out of pocket maximum (Edit: I didn't give thought to what my employer pays, and the idea that I might get more if they weren't paying that cost - more ignorance on my part! I'd cynically believe they'd just save the money, but I suppose they'd have to share to be competitive.). So for many people, some form of universal healthcare would save loads of money but I don’t imagine it would for me. It just wouldn’t matter to me anymore. Unfortunately, and I don’t think I’m alone here, it sometimes takes seeing the impacts of something before you can understand the need for it.

I’ve left out a lot, like he went to jail briefly when i was 9 and my mom started dating another man. He threatened to kill us all and shot out all of the windows in the home he was living in. Didn’t see him for some time after that. Basically, he has a lot of issues and I stay aware of them but have tried to navigate a relationship up until recently but I’ve been letting go of that. It’s too much effort.Then this past February his father died and there was a lot of drama over me not attending the funeral. A lot of threats, a lot of anger. He hasn’t really talked to me since. My AC broke at the beginning of the pandemic, but I didn’t really care because I wasn’t working, wasn’t going anywhere. Didn’t need it. There's no excuse for not looking, but sometimes jaywalking can be a deliberate choice that involves more than just distance. There's two crosswalks I jaywalk at because they're unsafe. One is by my bank, and the "walk" signal coincides with a green right turn arrow(people always reply to me when I share this story saying that's impossible, but I assure you, it is a thing). Cars do not look, because they have a green and assume you're walking against the signal(see: "that's impossible!"). This is an unsafe crossing, and after nearly getting creamed by a psychotic old lady I started crossing in the crosswalk but against the light(waiting until it's clear and making a run for it) when it was actually safe to do so rather than whenever the crosswalk decided it was time to sacrifice a pedestrian.
